George (Georgy) Gamow was a Soviet–American theoretical physicist and cosmologist who shaped our understanding of the early universe. Born in Odessa, he applied quantum theory and statistical physics to cosmology, hypothesizing that the universe originated from a hot dense state, now known as the Big Bang. Gamow was a pioneer of Big Bang nucleosynthesis—describing how light elements formed in the first minutes—and predicted the cosmic microwave background radiation long before its detection.
Gamow’s combination of mathematical modeling and scientific imagination transformed cosmology. His students (e.g. Alpher, Bethe) confirmed key predictions. Gamow’s accessible writings also inspired generations of scientists with enthusiasm for the cosmos.
